Starting Small in a Big Way – England’s Christopher Nolan

Since the early 2000s, the world has been going crazy with superhero movies and their respective film universes. The DC and Marvel series of films have garnered hundreds of millions of followings in both comic lovers and film enthusiasts. The popularity and success of these films would not have been possible if not for the hard work of its crew and directors.

England’s Christopher Nolan is one of the people responsible for the success of these superhero universes. He is a renowned and award-winning director who led the film crews that brought to the world the ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy (2005-2012). He also directed other successful blockbusters such as Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), and Dunkirk.

Debut and Beginning of Career

Christopher Nolan was born on July 20, 1970, in London, England. His father, Brendan James Nolan, worked as an advertising executive while his mother, Christina Jensen worked as a flight attendant and then as an English teacher. Even as a child, Nolan proved talented and passionate about filmmaking. At the age of 8, he has already been making short films with his action figures and his father’s camera.

The dreams and aspirations of an eleven-year-old boy to become a professional filmmaker became a reality when he debuted as the director of his first independent film called Following in 1998. It was filmed with a budget of only £3,000. Critics praised the film because of its compelling story and the artistry of the film’s camerawork and actors. Nolan had his breakthrough in the film Memento in 2001. The film had been given $4.5 million in budget after the film executives reviewed the script and found its retrograde storytelling an innovation in filmmaking. It won critical acclaim in its debut in the Venice International Film Festival and launched Nolan’s career as a director in the mainstream and blockbuster film industry.

Success in Blockbuster Movies

In 2003, Nolan proposed a renewal of the Batman film franchise to the Warner Bros. company. He remade the film series to be more in a more relatable world and in the perspective of classical drama. The film, Batman Begins, starred Christian Bale as the title character along with seasoned actors such as Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Liam Neeson. The film gained critically and box office success when it premiered in June 2005.

His success in Batman Begins was followed by the series’ succeeding franchises such as The Dark Knight in ’08 and The Dark Knight Rises four years later. In addition to his success in the superhero film universe, he also directed other popular and thought-provoking films. The film Inception was released in 2010 focused on the architectural workings of the human beings’ inner mind. Critics praised the film as an artistic blockbuster. Meanwhile, his 2014’s Interstellar is known for its scientific accuracy and one-of-a-kind viewing experience.
